Like all icons, fashion designer Valentino Garavani was best known by his first name.
And, while many aren’t as familiar with the man behind the famous name and legacy, there are countless celeb looks he’s influenced throughout the years you might recognised.
As tributes pour in from stars across entertainment and fashion after Valentino’s team announced his passing on January 19 – confirming the 93-year-old was surrounded by family in his home in Rome – we take a look back at three iconic celeb looks his fashion label brought to life.
Nicola Peltz-Beckham wore Valentino on her wedding day
Possibly the most timely look at the moment, Nicola Peltz-Beckham wore a Valentino design when she married Brooklyn Beckham in 2022.
The bride reportedly wanted to wear a design by her mother-in-law Victoria Beckham, however, the former Spice Girl reportedly pulled out of the process “in the 11th hour” according to Brooklyn’s statement addressing the ongoing family feud.
The new bride then opted for Valentino Haute Couture and her ‘something blue’ was a message from her mother, Claudia Heffner Peltz, sewn into the skirt, according to Vogue.
Talk about a great second option.
Valentino and Julia Roberts’ Oscar
Julia Roberts’ first and only Oscar win for Best Actress pushed a Valentino design front and centre, with the actor wearing one of his designs to the 2001 awards show.
While the dress was already considered vintage in 2001, it still stands the test of time and is widely deemed one of the best dresses to walk the Oscars red carpet.

Years later, Roberts admitted to Vogue Australia that she wasn’t able to part with the dress and kept it in a box under her bed.
And Valentino? He said the moment Roberts wore his dress to the Oscars was a standout in his career.
“I have dressed so many people but I have to be sincere: The person that made me feel so very, very happy was Julia Roberts,” Garavani told The Telegraph at the 2008 premiere of Valentino: The Last Emperor., a documentary based on his life and career.
“When she got the Academy Award for Erin Brockovich I watched it on television and really I was so excited that she appeared in my dress. It makes me so very happy and proves once more that movie stars love my clothes.”
Princess Diana wearing Valentino Red
Princess Diana and the history books go hand-in-hand, but bring Valentino into the mix and we’re really being spoiled.
Diana wore Valentino Red – a shade of crimson that became synonymous with the designer – on several occasions, most notably at an event celebrating Paul McCartney’s live album Liverpool in 1992.

The gown was made up of a velvet corset and lace skirt, with Diana even extending the colour palette down to her toes watching heels and stockings.
Candid photos of Valentino and Diana in the 1990s were also shared on Instagram by Giancarlo Giammetti – the co-founder and Honorary President of Valentino – showing the pair on a luxury yacht together.
