What Does Eyebrow Tinting Do?

Brow tints are a great way to make your eyebrows pop! Not only can they give your brows the perfect colour, but they can also make them look fuller and thicker. You can even complement your tinted brows with other treatments like waxing or threading to get the perfect eyebrows you’ve always wanted.

Eyebrow tinting can also be a great alternative for people who don’t have a lot of time to work with eyebrow pencils and gels. Plus, with the right technician, tinted brows can look much more natural than drawn-on eyebrows. Just take a look at these before-and-after pictures and see what we mean!

The treatment will work fine for most people, but not everyone’s going to have a good reaction to the dye. Treatments can trigger allergic reactions that can cause permanent eye damage, so be sure to have a patch test done at least a day before your appointment to see how your skin reacts to the dye.

How Does Eyebrow Tinting Work?

Unsurprisingly, it’s pretty similar to dyeing hair.

At the start of your treatment, your technician will apply base cream or petroleum jelly to the skin around your eyebrows to keep the dye from staining it. A semi-permanent dye will then be brushed onto your brows and left on for 5-15 minutes based on how thick your eyebrows are and how dark a shade you want the tints to be.

Once that’s done, all that’s left is to wipe the excess dye off with a wet cotton pad, and voila, you’ve officially got tinted eyebrows!

How Long Does Eyebrow Tinting Last?

So, how long does a brow tint last for? About three to six weeks, but certain factors can degrade the tint faster than usual.

For one, thinner eyebrows won’t be able to hold the tint for as long as thicker eyebrows. Sun exposure can also make the tint fade away faster as UV rays break up the chemical bonds that produce the tint’s colour. You can also accidentally wash the colour out of your brows if you sweat or wash your face a lot.

How To Make Your Eyebrow Tints Last Longer

1. Get Your Brows Tinted At A Salon

Technically, you can tint your brows at home with DIY kits, but it’s a lot safer to have a professional do it for you. Professional technicians know how to make tints last for as long as possible and they know which kinds of dye will work best with your skin.

2. Ask For Vegetable Dye Instead Of Henna

If you’re getting your eyebrows tinted for the first time, you’ll be better off with vegetable dyes as they last a little longer than other kinds of dye and take much less time to set. You’ll also be a lot safer with vegetable dyes as certain kinds of henna-based dyes can cause chemical burns.

3. Pick Darker Shades

You might want to pick a tint that’s a lot darker than your natural eyebrow colour because darker tints tend to last longer by default.

4. Avoid Washing Your Face For A Few Days

Much like with hair dyes, the colour from your eyebrow tints won’t completely set until a couple of days after the treatment, so avoid getting water on your brows for a little while. You might also want to avoid working out for the next few days because sweat can also wash out the colour from your eyebrows.

5. Minimise Your Time Under The Sun

The sun’s UV rays make colours fade, so try to spend as little time out in the sun as you can. If you have to be out and about, consider wearing a hat that can protect your eyebrows from the sun.

6. Keep Your Eyebrows Healthy

Healthy eyebrows don’t just look better – they hold on to tints better too. Protect your eyebrows with a little bit of castor oil and avoid using facial products that have alcohol in them.
