Apparently, your star sign dictates how you’ll shop this Black Friday

After covering Black Friday and Cyber Monday for three years in a row, I can tell you one thing for sure — this year’s sales are already shaping up to be huge. Every November, I think we’ve seen it all, and then retailers somehow turn it up another notch.

And now, with new research showing Aussies are letting their star signs steer their shopping habits, it looks like the planets might be adding a little extra chaos to the carts this year, too.

A new study from Samsung Electronics Australia found that nearly one-third of Aussies (31%) have made a shopping decision based on astrological timing, while more than half admit they’ve followed astrology at some point throughout the year.

Honestly? It makes perfect sense, especially with Black Friday landing smack in the middle of Mercury retrograde.

So what exactly are the signs up to this Black Friday?

According to the research, some star signs are far more astrologically motivated than others.

  • Scorpios and Aquarians (28%) are the most likely to let astrology influence what they buy — no surprises there.
  • Geminis are planning ahead and being unusually practical (for once!) with 49% mapping out their deals early.
  • Leos are waiting for “divine timing” — AKA letting the sales find them.

And when it comes to what’s actually ending up in Aussie carts:

  • Aquarians (50%) are eyeing new phones,
  • Leos (38%) want a TV upgrade,
  • Cancers (23%) are buying vacuums… because of course they are.

Gemini’s pick: the deal I’m holding out for

This Dreame robot vac is $500 off, and since I’m a Gemini, I’ll probably buy it twice “for research.”

What is Black Friday about in Australia?

Marking the beginning of the Christmas season, Black Friday is celebrated as one of the year’s largest sales events. This means you can expect to see major price drops across fashion, beauty, tech and more. There are sales both in-store and online, which means it’s easier for you to find the best deals, however you shop.

What date is Black Friday sales 2025?

This year, the sale falls on Friday, November 28. And luckily for us, the sale will run through to Cyber Monday, December 1. Ultimately, this means four days of discounted shopping, and over a weekend too.
