AUSSIE travellers can now book direct flights from Brisbane to Chicago and San Francisco for the first time ever.
The new routes will be operated by Qantas’ Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, and are available for sale from July 24.
The announcement follows the US Department of Transportation’s (DOT) final approval of Qantas’ joint business with American Airlines on July 19.
Flights to the much-loved Californian city of San Fran will start on February 9, 2020 and operate three times per week, complementing Qantas’ existing flights from Sydney and Melbourne.
Qantas International Acting CEO Naren Kumar said the route would appeal to leisure travellers as well as the growing number of Aussie entrepreneurs wanting to connect with Silicon Valley and San Fran’s world-leading technology companies.
The 14,326km flight from Brisbane to Chicago, the fourth longest in the world, will begin on 20 April 2020, operating four times per week. By flying direct, Qantas customers will save more than six hours on a return trip.
There has already been widespread interest in the new non-stop routes, with passengers able to enjoy next-generation seating and built-in jet lag reducing features.
“This is the first time Australians will have a direct link to Chicago, the third-largest US city,” said Kumar.
Kumar said the direct routes had been shown to stimuate new travel demand which is set to boost the Queensland economy and visitation to Australia.
“As the world’s largest economy, the United States offers enormous potential for inbound tourism to Queensland,” he said.
