He hit our screens tonight as the latest intruder in the American Invasion but almost immediately he seemed to be on the back foot. But ‘American Jared’ was luckily enough to be saved in the rose ceremony thanks to Laurina. WHO caught up with the Bachelor In Paradise veteran to see why he decided to take the plunge into the Australian version.
WHO: You’re a new face for the Australian audience, so how would you best describe yourself?
How would I best describe myself? I would describe myself as somebody… wow that’s a great question. I think it’s always difficult for somebody to describe themselves because of the simple fact that everybody’s going to say they try to be the nicest person they possibly can and they’re caring and thoughtful and blah, blah, blah, blah, you know, so I think you get judged by other people but I think I’m somebody that… I try to stay as humbled as possible and I think I try to be kind and personable to everybody I meet. I try not to be too judgmental, I am definitely somebody… I would describe myself as a conversationalist; I enjoy getting to know someone and learning more about them. I like to have very deep conversations about life and yeah, I think I’m also very average. I’m not the tallest guy, I’m not the strongest guy, I’m not the best looking guy, I’m just a guy so that’s I think how I’d describe myself.
WHO: You’ve been on the American version of Bachelor In Paradise. What made you say yes to the Aussie version?
I think it was more so why would I say no? That’s what I kept going back to was this opportunity is in front of me, at first I didn’t even think it was real, I didn’t even know that I could go on the Australian Bachelor until Warner Brothers called me and they’re like ‘Hey, we’re doing our first season of Bachelor In Paradise if you want to come down?’ So you know I went through all the pros and cons of why I would or why I wouldn’t do it. I talked to my friends and family about what I should do and so, you know, not only myself but the people that I value their opinions, we just kept going back to why would I say no to this? I understand that you’re going to a different continent, or you could potentially find someone that lives 10,000 miles away from you but having said that, it’s an opportunity of a lifetime and you really shouldn’t try to project into the future too much so that’s what I tried doing was, I tried just living in the moment and having the best experience I possibly could be and if it worked out where I ended up meeting someone that I cared enough about where I would either move to Australia for or they would move to the States, there’s worse things that could potentially happen so I was willing to take that chance and roll the dice.
WHO: What do you usually look for in a girl?
What I usually look for in a partner, there’s a lot of different things. I think first and foremost what I look for is how they treat other people. I always say… it’s a little different obviously in The Bachelor world, but if I was going on a date with a girl outside of Bachelor world, to a bar or a restaurant, one thing I always pay attention to is how they treat their servers or bartenders, there’s nothing more of a turnoff for me then when a waiter will come over and the girl that I’m on a date with won’t even look at them in the eye or even be cordial to them and so there’s nothing that I find more attractive then when the person that I am interested in is kind and treats others as they would want to be treated so that’s definitely something I look for in first impressions. Somebody who doesn’t take life too seriously, who’s able to laugh and not only laugh, not be afraid to say what’s on their minds and not be afraid to challenge me or make fun of me. I love good banter and so those are some of things I look for. Good banter, somebody that treats people very well and has good manners and looks at people in the eye when they’re talking to them and is willing to be silly and not take life so seriously sometimes.
WHO: Did you Google the Aussie bachelors and bachelorettes to see what you were in for?
I started Googling with some of my buddies about former cast members on The Bachelors, girls that had been rumored to be on the Bachelor In Paradise Australia. But I really didn’t do that much research because I just kind of wanted to go in blind for the simple fact that I was going in without any judgments or… like I wanted to go in blind for the simple fact that I kind of wanted to go and see what happens instead of like oh she’s cute, she’s not cute or like oh she was villainised so I’m not going to go after her. I kind of wanted just to go in, meet everybody in person and make my own judgments for myself about any ideas of who these people are.
WHO: How do you compare this experience with the American Bachelor in Paradise?
The Australian Bachelor In Paradise is far more laidback than the American version. It’s insane for me… the comparisons for the simple fact that the Australian Paradise felt far more like a vacation. Everybody was just easygoing and laidback and of course there was drama, it’s Bachelor In Paradise, but it’s far more easygoing than the American version.
WHO: Laurina gave you her rose at your first rose ceremony and you seemed interested to get to know her but she soon left the island. Were you given a reason as to why she disappeared?
You know I think Laurina just didn’t really feel it with anybody there, including myself and I don’t think she really needed… like hey, in the moment of course I wanted her to, when she got the date card I wanted her to ask me, just so we could go on a date and see if anything could potentially evolve but obviously she didn’t feel that strongly about her connection with me or anybody else in Paradise and so I don’t think she owed me any type of explanation or reason as to why she felt like she needed to leave. Had I wished she asked me on a date? Sure, of course because we’re in Paradise and she got a date card and it’s kind of like why not? Let’s just go on a date and have fun and see what happens but I certainly don’t think she owed me any type of explanation.
