Speaking to WHO exclusively, Family Feud host Grant Denyer opens up about his Gold Logie nomination, spending time with his children and always keeping the romance alive with his wife Chezzi.
WHO:What do you recall of past Logie nights and what do you hope for this one?
I just found I wasn’t very present. I was so scared that didn’t really enjoy the experience enough. This year, it might bethe last time I get nominated now that Family Feud is being rested, so this one should be fun.
WHO: Your radio co-host Ed Kavalee once told you that part of telling stories on air is you get to live more in the present. Is that true?
Yes, because that was a big decision in me doing radio. He said that would open my eyes up a lot more to life and what happens right in front of you, because you document it. So that’s had this really lovely flowing effect into other aspects of my life, including the Logies. Like, soak it up, live a little, and it’s OK to stop every now and then and give yourself a little healthy pat on the back and say, “You know what? You’re doing OK.”
WHO: Does it help to have an outlet to talk about all the happy and sad things in your life?
Yeah, definitely. I think I’ve never really been very good at cataloguing my experiences. I’ve done some wonderful things in 20 years of television, and I’ve done some crazy things as well, but I’ve always been wondering what’s next. With radio, I’m starting to look back in my life and tell some stories that have happened, and it’s really lovely because it brings up wonderful emotions. It’s quite cathartic.
WHO: You still race cars, too. Are your daughters Sailor, 7, and Scout, 2, daredevils as well?
Scout is. We have a very long driveway and she likes to sit on my lap and she drives, that’s her favourite thing, which at 2 is pretty crazy. Sailor’s a little bit of an actress—she’s very expressive. They go through phases. We were drawing dresses the other day, designing outfits for their Barbies. So it all changes.
WHO: Your wife Chezzi told Stellar you both were still “soppy in love.” Just how soppy?
We hold hands all the time when we drive, which is probably unsafe because it means I’ve only got one hand on the wheel. You know when you seecute, really old people walking down the street that are still holding hands, that are in their 80s? We go, “That’s going to be us. That’s what we want.” That’s what we’ve got.
WHO: Next for you is the Australian version of Ellen DeGeneres’s show Game of Games.
It’s a show that has the lunacy cranked up to about 11. It takes what Ellen does in her normal daytime TV show and puts them on this monumental level. It’s silliness cranked up to a stadium experience, really large scale, just dumping people in large vats of mashed potato and crazy games, which is cool.
WHO: So it’s very you, right?
It’s something that is just a good, fun, crazy laugh, so it’s right up my alley.
WHO: Have you met up with Ellen?
There are plans to bring us together, which would blow my freaking mind! She makes the kind of television I absolutely adore.
