New challenges await the six teams competing in Season 7 of House Rules.
A derelict warehouse will serve as the first big test for this year’s teams on House Rules.
Season 7 premieres on Sunday April 28 at 6pm, before the Grand Final of My Kitchen Rules, which will air at 8pm.
They’ll make over the building that will then serve as home base before heading out to make over each other’s properties.
WHO gets to know the six teams …
Sunshine Coast couple Shayn, 33, and Carly, 31, love where they live – they just don’t like their house, which “is a small rectangular box with bars on the windows, security screens all over the place and not much light,” according to Shayn. With two daughters, Harper, 5, and Imogen, 3, the couple, who have been married for six years, want to transform their residence into their “forever home”. Former chippie and construction supervisor Shayn now works in civil engineering and reveals, “Carly says I don’t take certain things seriously enough sometimes.” Carly, meanwhile, admits, “I over-think things!”

Sisters and professional surfers Eliza, 21, and Mikaela, 24, might be at the top of their game in their chosen career, but they are at the bottom of the pack when it comes to renovation experience, having never done any previously. Their reason for competing is simple – they’re doing it for their mother, who lives in the family home (which the other teams will transform) in the Margaret River region, following her divorce from her daughters’ father. “We are on this show for Mum,” Eliza says. Mikaela adds: “Mum has worked tirelessly our entire lives to give us everything we could possibly want. She’s sacrificed so much for our surfing.”

Married dance instructors Pete, 32, and Courtney, 31, believe their profession is going to give them an advantage. “If there’s one thing we bring to this competition, it’s style,” says Pete. Courtney adds: “People underestimate dancers. But dancers are resilient. We’re always the first to arrive and last to leave.” The couple, who fell in love in high school, have a house in the foothills of Victoria’s Dandenong Ranges with a number of unsafe features that need updating – something they are especially conscious of now they are parents to 1-year-old son Casper. They’re also very competitive. “We’re not really interested in second place,” Pete says.

The off-the-grid cottage in NSW’s Southern Tablelands this married couple moved to in 2016 is the type of place estate agents would describe optimistically as a “renovator’s dream”. “It’s small and falling down,” federal police officer Alex, 32, says. Katie, 29, a midwife and stay-at-home mum to 1-year-old daughter Hallie, adds: “We’ve always seen the potential in this place.” Having both grown up in the country, the couple, who met in 2014, are all for living an eco lifestyle. “That doesn’t mean candles and pedalling for our electricity. It just means sustainable, innovative ways to give back to the environment,” Alex says.

This fitness-loving couple might be newlyweds, but fireman Andy, 32, and flight attendant Lisa, 30, have been together for 11 years – and already tried their hand at one major renovation. Even so, they are definitely still in the honeymoon phase. “He’s a hero,” Lisa says of her husband. “And he’s got a great little bod on him!” Their gift to the other teams is their dated Adelaide house. “What’s wrong with this house? Where to begin!” Andy says. “It feels like it’s never changed from the time it was built.” As for how they work as a team, Lisa says, “He is the calm and I’m the chaos.” Andy agrees: “Lisa is a stress head!”

“We don’t start anything with the intention of losing!” Mat, 27, says of himself and brother Tim, 32, both carpenters. Tim shares Mat’s confidence: “There’s no doubt we are a winning combination. We’ve renovated before; we’ve done it together to a high standard and are confident in what we do.” Fighting words. The brothers, who share a mother but have different fathers, have always been close, and have entered the show as a way of helping out Tim’s young family, wife Kate and 1-year-old daughter Isabella, who last year moved into a 1950s weatherboard cottage that’s never been renovated. Mat says, “It’s a dump.”
