PAUL Burrell and Princess Diana were more than just royal subject and household butler.
He was her confidant – there in the toughest of times; the caring ear she desperately needed and the reliable shoulder she couldn’t do without. So to see him still milking her memory for his own gain, 20 years on from her sudden death, is nothing short of tragic.
Burrell, perhaps the world’s best one-name dropper, is currently in the South African jungle participating in Channel Ten’s reality series I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! Celebrity? He’s only a so-called celebrity because he trades on a beloved dead woman’s secrets. He’s even referred to on the show as a “royal insider”.
He’s written books about Princess Diana’s deepest thoughts, insecurities, regrets, loves, heartbreaks and tragedies – tidbits shared with him in confidence, which he should’ve cherished.

And after barely a day in the jungle camp, Burrell was at it again, ‘revealing’ about who Prince Harry’s real father is. Spoiler alert: it’s Charles. He can’t help himself. Diana is his meal ticket, his claim to fame, the cause of his appearance in countless reality shows and the only reason anyone cares about him. It’s tired, it’s desperate and it’s deeply selfish.
The people’s princess is long gone, so the brunt of his actions don’t impact her. But Diana’s two sons – royals or not – are at stages of their lives where they could do without the flurry of tabloid headlines that follow whenever Burrell opens his mouth.
One’s a father of two with a third on the way, holding down a demanding job. The other is about to wed and begin an exciting new chapter of his life. If Burrell was really as devoted to Diana as he claims, he should respect what’s left of that bond born from loyalty that he and her shared. And finally, he should zip his lips and move on.
