They’re still going after Trump

“The show has become far more political than we anticipated because the world changed,” co-creator Michelle King said at the recent CBS All Access Television Critics Assn. press tour panel about the upcoming third season. With the second season ending with a quote from President Trump saying it was the “calm before the storm”, co-creator Robert King said, “This season is about finding out what that storm is. It involves … the guardrails coming off our institutions. What does a resistance look like given those circumstances?” At the forefront of the resistance at firm Reddick, Boseman & Lockhart is Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) who questions how you can resist a crazy administration without losing your own mind. From the looks of the trailer, it also appears Diane and on-off husband Kurt (Gary Cole) are in one of their ‘on’ phases.

Lucca is a mum

New mother Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo) juggles motherhood with her responsibilities as the firm. And just to keep her busy, there will be a new love interest for the lawyer. In the trailer, Lucca also questions a fleet of new hires at Reddick, Boseman & Lockhart, which changes the nature of the once predominatly African-American firm. Looks like racial issues will continue to be an important theme in Season 3.

The show will continue to stay as current as possible

The difficulty faced by a drama series filmed some time before it airs is that current events can change the nature of the world overnight. “We have a few backup plans if the world runs ahead of us,” Robert King said. “You try to stay as close to the zeitgeist as possible.” Michelle King added: “I think everyone will cheerfully rewrite if we’re in a different point.”

Michael Sheen is joining the cast

Robert King describes new lawyer Roland Blum, played by Michael Sheen, as “a lawyer [for whom] liberal, conservative doesn’t matter. What matters is winning and how you get ahead. He’s a devil, a satan within our law firm.” Roland will clash with Maia (Rose Leslie), who is assigned to work with him. Maia, meanwhile, seems to be kissing someone other than girlfriend Amy (Heléne Yorke, who is a now a regular on comedy series The Other Two) in one scene in the trailer.

There will be singing

There won’t be a musical episode as such, but we can expect some of the characters to break out into song, including Roland, who will sing The Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There”, while Diane and Liz Lawrence (Audra McDonald) will tackle “Raspberry Beret” by Prince. Yes, really.

But no Juliana Margulies

The Good Fight has moved way beyond being just a spin-off of The Good Wife, but even so, fans would love to see Alicia Florrick (Juliana Margulies) interact with her friends and former colleagues at some point. It just won’t be in Season 3, with the creators saying it doesn’t make sense to bring Alicia in to the show at this point.
