I did my makeup on my commute for 7 days using only No7 products – here’s how it went

If I can't use it on the train under 10 minutes, I don't want it.

I like wearing makeup but absolutely hate the time it takes out of my morning. I’d much rather delight in those extra minutes of sleep or actually sit down for breakfast, so I’ve decisively put my foot down.

I’m officially joining the club of women who do their face on their commute.

But, before I fan away your ‘revolutionist’ claims, please be aware that I decided to stick to some familiarity and used only No7 products.

I’ve been using their foundation since I was a teenager so it felt like a good place to start as I tiptoe into this new world of doing my makeup on a train full of strangers.

For seven days, I tried six No7 products available in Australia (plus my trusty foundation) and my criteria was simple: I want products that are easy to apply and leave me feeling ready to face my day.

Other than reminding me of *that* face I pull when doing my mascara and that I really ought to give my friend her blazer back (sorry Tess), here’s my honest review of my week:

Step 1: Primer

First off, we have the No7 primer.

It comes in a tub that looks more like a moisturiser than a primer (and it admittedly felt similar) but I really liked its buttery consistency. It left my face feeling light and hydrated, and my skin just tacky enough to know it was ready to grab onto my makeup.

Just remember to wash your hands before putting the primer onto clean skin! I used a little hand sanitiser on the train.

Step 2: Blush

Contending with the train’s harsh downlights and a small hand mirror, I was worried I might overdo my blush. I had visions of stepping onto the platform and unknowingly resembling a clown, however, (thankfully), the No7 lip and cheek stick didn’t do me dirty.

Instead, it added colour to my face and it was buildable.

I added it to the bridge of my nose and cheeks after my foundation, and later topped up these areas while adding some colour to my lips. For some, it might not be pigmented enough, but it was great for my commute.

Sizes: 10g

Colours: I used Rose Pink/Pearl Glow with others shades available – Rose Coral/Rose Glow & Soft Berry/Warm Glow.

Step 3: Brows

I often opt for a clear brow product that lets me simply position my brows and give them that extra bit of oomph, all without overdoing it, and the brow gel done exactly that.

There was no sticky residue that sometimes comes from a brow product mixing with foundation, so I could happily position them and move onto my next step. If you like to add colour or depth to your brows, this maybe it’s for you. But, if you like something fuss free, look no further.

Step 4: Liner

My favourite product of them all – the No7 pro artist eyeliner!

Despite bobbing about on the train, I was still able to create a defined cat eye with this product (and add to my inner corner and tightline). It was just the right balance between giving me a sharp line but also smudgeable if I didn’t quite ace the application. Will definitely use again.

Sizes: 1.2g

Colours: I wore Noisette Brown by Noir Black is also available.

Step 5: Lashes

Okay, believe me when I tell you that this mascara got me not one, but two compliments about the length of my eyelashes in one day. Win!

The wand applicator is long and slim (behave yourself) and was easy to coat all my lashes in one swipe. It did sometimes do that thing where it clumped my lashes together, so I had to carefully go in with the wand and separate them again, but it was an easy fix – the product wasn’t sticky so it would move before it dried.

The mascara definitely had lasting power and when I did remove it with an oil cleanser at the end of my day, it came off in little clumps that I found oddly satisfying. Is that a selling point? I don’t know, but I’ll be using it again.

Sizes: 8.5 mL

Colours: Black/Brown

Step 6: Finishing touch

The cherry on top was spritzing my face with No7’s fixing spray (why does it make you feel so glamorous?).

I don’t have many criteria for a setting spray other than it not feeling heavy on my skin and getting a genuine sense that it’s polishing off my look, and this hit the mark on both!

Sizes: 80 mL
