I’m equal parts excited and horrified for the release of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
Am I happy that Haymitch is finally getting his story told on the big screen? Yes. Am I also absolutely dreading watching the horror unfold all over again, especially after I traumatised myself reading the book? Also yes.
That said, I’ve been fan-girling every time a new teaser, trailer or photo still drops. One moment that caught my eye was reaping day, as Maysilee Donner faces the horrifying reality of having her name called. We know there’s only heartbreak ahead.
But according to McKenna Grace, Maysilee’s appearance isn’t just for show. Her outfit has a message of its own.

“They won’t see me as an animal. I’ll force them to look at me as a human because I’m going to look my best while I do this,” she told USA TODAY Shopping, explaining what was going through her mind.
Maysilee’s rebellious energy, as McKenna notes, is similar to that of Johanna Mason and Finnick Odair. The difference, though, is that Maysilee remains feminine, fashionable and impeccably put together, even in the most horrific circumstances.
“I think people will really like her quip, and her anger and fightingness, but also the fact that she likes to be put together,” McKenna added.
Because the outfit is already so iconic, I have a feeling fans will want to recreate the look for Halloween or wear it to the cinema when the movie hits screens. Here’s where to get the look.
Where to get Maysilee’s reaping day outfit
Staying true to the book, Maysilee wore a muted lavender dress that matched her twin sister Merrilee’s pink one, finishing the vintage-inspired look with Mary Janes, crew socks and a big bow to top it all off.
She also layered half a dozen necklaces, mixing beaded and corded styles with trinket-adorned designs and real gold pieces.
