It’s only the first week of Australian Survivor: Blood V Water, but those who came to play are already making themselves known.

One of the players to emerge from the pack in the premiere episode was Shayelle Lajoie, a Brisbane-based yoga teacher and biomedical student who has entered the game with her partner Ben Watson. Shayelle resides in the Water Tribe for now, while her partner is in the Blood Tribe.

In her tribe, Shayelle was the first to find a clue for a hidden immunity idol, which she immediately shared with her new friend and ally Brianna Goodchild.

Although a copy of the same clue was then found by Chrissy Zaremba – who nabbed the hidden idol before Shay could get to it – Shay’s moves cemented her as one to watch.

Shay came onto the show alongside Ben, and just like every other contestant this season, had no idea that she’d be separated from him and asked to play against her partner.

She wrote about the moment on Instagram last night, sharing a few shots from the episode.

“The moment you realise you won’t have your blood by your side. Heart racing. Trying not to show it,” she penned.

Chatting to Brianna during the episode, Shay revealed that the tough-as-nails couple met 11 years ago in the surf and have been inseparable ever since.

A quick look at their social media shows a reflection of a super-strong relationship. The pair are both into their fitness and are currently supporting each other through new endeavours – university for Shay, and a passion for photography for Ben.

Ben shares photos of Shay all the time, and often refers to her affectionately as “Spud.”

Taking to Instagram recently, he posted a smiley snap of the two, writing: “Always and in all ways possible, I love you.”

In his intro video for Survivor, he also calls her “a little energiser bunny I like to keep in my back pocket.”

He goes on to say that they will play the game similarly given that they’re “nice, genuine people who others are drawn to.”

“She’s more tactical,” he says of Shay. “She will take a further step back than me, and I will just gun it.”

He adds that if Shay gets eliminated, “you guys are going to see the big man cry”.

However, he admits that he would consider blindsiding Shay “if the tactics were right and the timing was perfect.” Harsh, but we’d love to see it.

We’re super keen to see more of Ben and Shay and find out if they get to play together once the tribes swap!

Australian Survivor: Blood V Water airs Monday to Wednesday, and Sunday, 7:30pm on 10.
