For 25 years, avid NRL fans have settled into their couches to have a fair share of laughs, analyse the sport and be treated to some great musical performances every Thursday night – but now it appears that will be no more as the The NRL Footy Show is being axed from Channel 9.

“It’s been an incredible ride for The Footy Show,” Channel 9’s director of sport Tom Malone said in an official statement.

“A quarter of a century of laughs, controversy and first-class footy analysis … Fatty holds the record for the longest serving host of any prime time Australian TV show — a tribute to both his understanding of the game, his authenticity, and not to mention his incredible comedic timing.”

The show which was launched in 1994 with Paul ‘Fatty’ Vautin as the host, went through a transition this year when he decided to leave the show.

It’s a sad day for Australian television.
