My Kitchen Rules served even more controversy and chaos during Alisha and Deanne’s Instant Restaurant, ‘Hot Mess’.
During the cook, contestants were left speechless by “the queen of critique”, Jane, after she revealed that she was taking Alisha and Deanne’s plates into consideration for her scoring.
The self-proclaimed ‘Classy Bogans’ served their three courses on some colourful melamine plates, causing a raised eyebrow from the food stylist.
When she expressed her distaste for the plating, she was met with objections from the other contestants around the table, with many questioning why she cares so much about the plates when they should be judging the food.
However, it seems many fans actually agree with Jane on what Channel Seven have labelled ‘plate gate’.
Speaking to WHO, Alisha and Deanne unpacked Jane and Shane’s controversial judging style.
“I guess Jane was judging plates,” the Adelaide besties said. “She wasn’t eating what was on her plate. She was just judging what it was like.
“It reminds me of the critic from the Ratatouille movie. ‘If I don’t like the food, I don’t eat the food. If I don’t like the plate, I won’t eat the plate.'”
Fans divided over ‘plate gate’ on My Kitchen Rules
Since this season began, viewers have been critical of “villain” Jane and her comments about ‘tasting, not eating’.
Although when it comes to ‘plate gate’, it seems there are more fans who align with Jane’s opinion than expected.
“I’m not a fan of Jane, but she was correct tonight regarding the plates used for the main meal,” one fan wrote online. “Serving protein and veg on plates decorated with fruit. It did look like a children’s party or picnic. In this instance, aesthetic mattered.”
“I kind of agree with Jane re the plate,” another agreed. “It does look a little tacky for a competition. I think a white or single-colour plate would look better and showcase the food. Can’t stand Jane and Shane, but sometimes she has a point, as much as we don’t want to admit it.”
“I agree with Jane,” a third chimed in. “A white plate looks cleaner and aesthetically pleasing.”

However, many also defended Alisha and Deanne, pointing out what they have been reiterating for a while now: this is a show for home cooks.
“Agreed on the plates but it’s not about the plate it’s about the food,” one viewer pointed out online.
“I actually like that they used those plates,” another user commented. “It IS supposed to be a show for HOME COOKS. I like that the girls are standing up for that, before MKR ends up like The Block, going from home renovators to ONLY building multi-million-dollar homes.”
“Would I plate up on those plates? No. But if that is part of their theme, then fair enough. It is still about the food when all is said and done,” a third wrote.
While the fans couldn’t agree on whether they liked the plates or not, one thing is for sure — there’s more drama to come.
