Ten years ago, Angelina Jolie gave birth to Shiloh Jolie Pitt in Swakopmund, Namibia, with Brad Pitt on-hand to cut his daughter’s umbilical cord.
Since then, the first biological child of Pitt, 52, and Jolie Pitt, 40, has carved out her own distinct path in style, attitude and awareness between older siblings Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, and Zahara, 11, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 7.
In 2008, Pitt told Oprah Winfrey that Shiloh “only wants to be called John. John or Peter. So it’s a Peter Pan thing.” Two years later, when Shiloh was 4, her mum told Vanity Fair that she enjoyed dressing “like a little dude… She likes tracksuits, she likes suits. She likes to dress like a boy. She wants to be a boy. So we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boys’ everything. She thinks she’s one of the brothers.”
Even so, Shiloh has been all-in for her family, whether walking their bulldog Jacques in New Orleans, working on her parents’ movies (she provided animal sounds for her mum’s animated flick Kung Fu Panda 3) or attending premieres around the world.
She also has inherited her dad’s mischievous streak. In a video taken on the set of the couple’s film By the Sea, Shiloh could be seen giggling and running around her once-napping dad with a slingshot.
But she is very much a mama’s girl, too, asking to accompany Jolie Pitt on a UN-sponsored visit to Lebanon last year when she was 9 to see a 12-year-old Syrian girl named Hala, whose story she had heard from her mum.
“Upon leaving the family, Shiloh asked many questions,” Jolie Pitt told WHO. “It is of course hard to explain all of the harsh realities of war and displacement. She said she felt sad, but was happy that she went and is looking forward to the next visit.”
