With another season of Shrinking officially on the cards, fans rejoice that the comedy-drama will be back on our screens and Michael Urie along with it.

Urie, who plays the witty estate lawyer Brian, keeps Jason Segel’s character Jimmy honest throughout the season – just like a real best friend should.

But Urie admitted to WHO he was “nervous” about playing Segel’s best friend in the show, saying he wasn’t sure if the pair were “compatible” before filming.

“I knew I was going to be playing Jason’s best friend, and I didn’t know Jason. And I thought, there’s definitely going to be some kind of chemistry read,” he told WHO.

However, there was not.

The actor is no stranger to generating dynamic on-screen relationships with his Hollywood counterparts (famously establishing a fun dynamic with America Ferrera in Ugly Betty), but the lack of chemistry read with Segel before securing his Shrinking role kept Urie on his toes.

“I was really nervous. I was like, what’s it going to be like to suddenly have to one, two, three, be best friends?”

Michael Urie’s concern turned into ‘easiest part’ of Shrinking role

Thankfully, Urie’s biggest concern ahead of shooting quickly melted into utter ease for the actor.

Urie and Segel were easily able to spark a best-friend chemistry on-screen and it’s one of the core relationships in the show – one which the ensemble cast (including Harrison Ford, Christa Miller and Jessica Williams) build upon.

“It was actually probably the easiest part of the job because Jason Segel is the menschiest mensch of all mensches,” he told WHO.

We’re not quite sure what that means, but we do know it’s a sentence full of endearment for his co-star.

“He is such a sweet man. He is so soulful. He’s the kind of guy you talk to for 10 minutes and you’re crying because he’s gotten to the heart of who you are.”

Problem solved.
