Tom Hiddleston may be best known for his role as Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it was his work on Betrayal that altered the course of his life. Why? Because it led him to the love of his life.
In 2019 the British actor, who had previously dated Taylor Swift, starred in a revival of Harold Pinter’s play Betrayal. Also in the cast was Zawe Ashton, a British actress, playwright and narrator.
Despite neither Tom nor Zawe confirming their relationship, publications quickly began reporting that the co-stars were dating and rumours went into overdrive when they were spotted together at the U.S. Open.
Tom’s decision to keep his relationship out of the public eye this time around wasn’t surprising to fans, as the actor had previously spoken about his desire to keep his private life out of the public sphere.
“Everyone is entitled to a private life,” he had told The Telegraph in March 2017, following his whirlwind romance with Taylor.
“I love what I do and I dedicate myself with absolute commitment to making great art and great entertainment, and in my mind I don’t conflict the two. My work is in the public sphere and I have a private life. And those two things are separate.”
Tom and Zawe kept things quiet until September 2021, when they made their red-carpet debut at the Tony Awards.
The following year in March 2022, the couple attended the BAFTAs together and an oval-shaped ring on Zawe’s left hand got the internet talking. The following month US Magazine confirmed their engagement.
The couple themselves remained coy, however, with Tom telling the Los Angeles Time, “I’m very happy,” in response to a question about their engagement.
In June 2022 Vogue confirmed that the couple were expecting their first child together as Zawe debuted her baby bump at the premiere of Mr. Malcom’s List.
Just two months later, Zawe made rare comments about her relationship with Tom, telling Cosmopolitan UK: “I feel like every single person who does this job has to figure out ways to keep their working life and their personal life as compartmentalized as possible.”
“I think, like anything, it starts with intention. Everything I do in my work is intentional [and] I try to make everything I do in my life as intentional as possible, meaning just being conscious.”
By August 2022, publications began reporting that the couple had welcomed their first child together.
“Tom and Zawe are loving being new parents and are filled with joy,” a source told US Magazine at the time. “They have been having the struggles of new parents and aren’t sleeping much but are thrilled.”
Following the reports, Tom and Zawe have managed to keep their relationship and growing family firmly out of the public eye, with the pair only spotted together on a rare outing at Wibledon in July 2023.
