RICKY – Our star character. A snarky sweetheart who dated fellow junior student Nini for a year. When Nini unexpectedly dumps Ricky, he hatches a plan to get her back by auditioning to star alongside her in the school’s production of High School Music. He’s the class-clown who uses his humour to cover up his fear of not being good at anything besides coasting through life based on his charm. His best friend and fellow skater Big Red are big on attempting get-rich-quick schemes.

NINI – Having just got back from summer camp, Nini has found her voice and the confidence to audition for a lead role in the school musical after playing the lead in The Music Man at camp, rather than sticking to the background. Along with her newfound confidence comes a new boyfriend too who she met while at camp. She’s fiercely loyal to her two mothers and is stronger than you think.

E.J. – The supremely confident and ambitious nerd is Nini’s new love interest. If he wants something – like starring opposite “his” girl Nini – you better not get in his way (looking at you Ricky). Despite his confidence, he’s secretly prone to anxiety attacks when plans don’t go the right way. Although he brings homemade props to auditions, he’s less of an actor and more of a producer – after all, he is the son of two high-powered attorneys.

ASHLYN – To cover her “new kid” self-doubt, Ashlyn is brash, gutsy and has a mouthy attitude. She’s still trying to find her place in the school hierarchy and it helps her that her cousin is senior student E.J. She’s secretly an aspiring songwriter and doesn’t mind if she’s cast in the musical or not, as long as she makes it on the student council. Reading horoscopes and meditating are some of her favourite past-times.

BIG RED – He’s stuck by the side of his best friend Ricky for what feels like a lifetime. A skater dude at heart, he channels the spiritual energy of Bill and Ted and is always fuzzy and sleep-deprived. Having served as the wisecracking third wheel to Ricky and Nini’s relationship, he’s oddly devastated by the separation. Harbouring a secret crush for Nini, he know faces a moral best-friend dilemma and joins the backstage crew to be “Nini-adjacent” throughout production.

GINA – She sees herself as the true star of the show and curses her drama teacher for not casting her as a lead, leaving her to be an understudy – or, as she calls it, a “wonderstudy”. She’s an entitled princess but her ambition pales in comparison to her stage mother’s. Having starred in a Canadian tour of Annie in the 6th grade, she worries that perhaps she’s already peaked in her career. Nonetheless, her Instagram videos of her singing go viral.

VIKRAM – He iPhone background is Beyoncé and he already has his Tony Award for Best Choreography speech written out. Being a talented dancer, he’s in charge of all the choreography for the school’s production of High School Musical. Some may call him a teacher’s pet but he sees his drama teacher as more of a peer and even eats lunch in her office.

MISS JENN – After leaving New York in a hurry (and under suspicious circumstances) Miss Jean joins the school as the brand new drama teacher. When the school board doesn’t grant her the $50,000 budget she requested, she forces student choreographer Vikram to do a Kickstarter to help fund the musical. She’s high-energy and low-reality and would ultimately do anything for these kids.
