Fans were left scratching their heads after Waleed took a swipe at Steve, mocking his height and calling him short.
The incident occurred during a segment about a child and his toy tractor, which the two-year-old had used to drive to a carnival.
“The tractor in that story looks like your tractor,” Waleed, 40, joked to Steve.
His heightist joke amused colleagues Carrie Bickmore and Peter Helliar, and even Steve seemed to take it in his stride.
“Aw, short jokes so early!” Steve, 64, replied with a smile.
“Pretty funny though,” a laughing Carrie added.

But minutes later, Waleed had a change of heart about his earlier insult, and apologised to Steve.
“Before, I made a joke at your expense, it was a short joke you’re right … not good enough by me, sorry about that,” Waleed said.
“No, that’s OK,” Steve replied. “I’ve been putting up with it my whole life.”
“I know, and I never make those jokes and I know you personally don’t actually care,” Waleed continued.
“But after you said it [was a short joke], yeah no that was pretty crap.”
“You didn’t need to say that, thank you,” Steve said.
“No, I think I probably did,” Waleed said.
The Project just celebrated its 10th anniversary.
Carrie is the only host to still remain from the show’s original line up, which also included Dave Hughes and Charlie Pickering when it launched as The 7pm Project in 2009.
