Joe Hildebrand 40, and his journalist wife Tara Ravens have an almost 3-year-old son named Henry, but the Studio 10 host reveals the couple is bracing themselves for the hardest part of second-time parenthood — getting the old stuff out of the shed! WHO sat down with the Hildebrand as he announces his wife's second pregnancy.
Q: Is Henry aware he's going to be a big brother?
A: Henry is not aware that's it coming yet. We've tried to say, 'How do you feel if you had a baby?' And I think he said he would like to eat a baby, because I think he pretty much wants to eat everything at the moment! But yeah, he's pretty good.
Q: How is Tara doing?
A: Tara's fine. She's healthy. Everything is on track. The baby is nice and healthy and it's terrific.
Q: How will it be to juggle life with two instead of one and had you always planned to grow your family?
A: We always wanted a couple of kids and we are very happy. We're in a two-bedroom house, so they are going to have to share a bedroom until they are 18 years old, or possibly 30 years old, which is when kids move out these days.
Q: So are you re-purposing stuff you've already used with Henry?
A: I've got a very scary shed in the backyard that is filled with all the stuff we bought for Henry when we were hysterical first-time parents, so, you know, the mechanical rockers and the little playthings with the little spinny things that they sit in, so I'm trying to wipe it from my mind, but I'm going to have to go into the shed and actually dig out. Basically, the door barely shuts. As soon as it opens, I'm going to be hit on the head with something and it's all buried right up the back, of course, in the worst possible place. So that is actually the most terrifying part of having another baby!
Q: What have you learned about yourself over the past couple years of fatherhood?
A: I have learned that it is simultaneously the hardest and the easiest thing in the world to do. There is nothing more impossible and nothing more natural. The terror of not knowing what you are going to do, or be able to do, or how to deal with a little baby, obviously that's gone the second time around, but you'll also have the even worse terror of knowing just what you're in for! It's going to be fun.
Q: Are your Studio 10 colleagues throwing you a shower?
A: I certainly hope so. I'm just hoping they just cut out the middleman and just give me cash. I have done the sums and I am about to go broke very, very soon, so I think we will be raiding the Studio 10 prize room really soon, auction the whole lot off on eBay and then just give me the money. Give me the cold, hard cash!
