Long, healthy nails are an unwavering trend in the beauty industry – there’s a reason gel overlays, acrylics, SNS, and press-ons are so popular. While these incredible nail technologies can certainly replicate the appearance of a long, natural manicure, it’s understood that the persistent application of such materials can actually be to the detriment of nail health – affecting the growth of the natural nail in the process.

In comes the naked manicure. Otherwise referred to as a no-polish manicure or bare manicure, the entire objective of the treatment is to enhance the strength of the natural nails, whilst enhancing their appearance naturally.

What is a naked manicure?

A naked manicure is, put simply, a manicure treatment without the application of polish. Referring to the cleaning, buffing, shaping, and treating of nails, the manicure has increased in popularity due to its strong benefit on natural nail health.

Offering the treatment in her own salon, Sydney-based Chanel manicurist Jocelyn Petroni has also popularised the manicure style.

Are bare nails better than polished nails?

The no-polish manicure is perfect for those who need a break from their traditional, heavy-duty nail treatments. Whether it be split nails, jagged cuticles or brittle nail plates, by focusing on nail care rather than nail coats, recipients can reap the benefits of naturally long nails. The treatment, which often includes the application of a keratin-rich product encourages healthy growth.

This can be maintained at home with a cuticle oil or nail cream.

How often should you get a naked manicure?

Whether you choose to visit a salon or recreate the experience at home (more below), for the first few weeks, weekly treatment will promote the most effective results.

From there, extend to a fortnightly basis.

How to recreate the naked manicure at home

1. Clean and file your nails to their desired shape. Apply cuticle remover or soften your hands in a bowl of warm, soapy water.

2. Using a cuticle pusher, gently push back your cuticles. Going in with a cuticle nipper, trim off any excess edges – do so carefully.

3. With a double-sided buffing block, gently buff out your nails and, then, using the soft side, polish your nails until shiny.

4. Finish off with a cuticle oil and nourishing hand cream.
