It’s hard to believe we’re even talking about it, but in the world of showbusiness the year 2022 isn’t that far away, with just a few months left until we’re ringing in the New Year.
As we prepare to celebrate with fireworks, champagne and maybe even a pair of novelty glasses – hey, it’s 2022, dream big – the Australian television networks are readying themselves for an entertaining new year of shows.

The Nine Network unveiled their grand plans for next year via their virtual upfronts on Wednesday, showing us what’s coming to Nine, 9Gem, 9Life and 9Go.

Reality TV + Lifestyle
When it comes to reality, the Nine Network is known to go big. In 2021, fans are still eagerly awaiting the arrival of Love Island Australia, Snackmasters, Lego Masters Christmas, Country Home Rescue with Shaynna Blaze, Carols By Candlelight and more. As for next year? It just gets better.
House renovation fanatics will have their fill, breathing in the fresh country air Australia has to offer as many much-loved series head out of the city.
The Block will be switching things up, with a “tree change” in its 18th season. For the first time, the Blockheads will head to the Australian bush to transform country houses into “someone’s great Australian dream” among the gumtrees.
Buying Byron will make its debut, with a new ultra-competitive group of real estate agents working to sell the ‘sexiest’ real estate on earth. Showing off the beachside glamour and jaw-dropping mansions of Byron, we’ll catch a glimpse into how the other half live.
Celebrity Apprentice Australia will be back with Lord Alan Sugar at the head of the boardroom table, with Turia Pitt and radio duo Will & Woody announced as the first contestants.
Allison Langdon will head up a new reality series called Parental Guidance, that looks to be an amalgamation of Wife Swap and MAFS.
Speaking of, Married At First Sight will, of course, return for its ninth season of true love, heartbreak and potential wine-throwing. Meanwhile, new docu-dramas Missing Persons Investigation, Million Dollar Murders and Australia Behind Bars are sure to have viewers on the edge of their seats.
Other returning favourites include Country House Hunters, Lego Masters, Beauty and the Geek, Australian Ninja Warrior, Emergency, Travel Guides, RBT, Taronga: Who’s Who In The Zoo, Paramedics, Millionaire Hot Seat, The 100, Space Invaders, Getaway and Mega Zoo.
Drama
Fans of the Underbelly franchise will be thrilled to know the high-stakes drama series is making a return with an all-star cast. Underbelly: Vanishing Act will tell the story of the bizarre disappearance of Melissa Caddick, the high-roller who allegedly embezzled over $40 million before vanishing into thin air.
Starring Kate Atkinson (Wentworth) as Melissa Caddick, alongside Colin Friels (Mystery Road), Tai Hara (Home and Away), Maya Stange (Love Child), Ursula Mills (Out of the Blue), and Sophie Bloom (Love Child), it’s sure to be a smash hit.
Meanwhile, Home and Away alum Lincoln Younes will join Sullivan Stapleton (Animal Kingdom) and Magda Szubanski (Kath & Kim, Babe) in a gripping new drama, After The Verdict.
Telling the story of four very different Australians who have just finished jury duty on a high-profile murder trial. As they return to normal life, they begin to question their verdict and take matters into their own hands.

Today will obviously return to our screens next year, with Karl Stefanovic and Ally Langdon, along with Brooke Boney, Alex Culln and Tim Davies. Richard Wilkins and Rebecca Maddern will kick off your Saturday and Sunday on Weekend Today.
Under Investigation With Liz Hayes is back, along with A Current Affair, 60 Minutes and, of course, 9News.
Sport
When it comes to ‘nine’s wide world of sports’ the focus will turn to women in football, with free-to-air episodes of the AFLW and Women’s State of Origin.
They’ll also air the NRL, State of Origin, and the Ruby Union Championship live from Queensland.
Tennis returns to Nine in the new year, too, with the ATP Cup, Brisbane International, Adelaide International, the Austraian Open and the US Open, Wimbledon, Roland-Garros and Laver Cup Tennis.
Plus, the classic sports programs The NRL & The AFL Sunday Footy Show, 100% Footy and Footy Classified.
Events will also hit our screens in a big way, with the TV WEEK Logie Awards, Aria Awards and Carols By Candlelight set to air in 2022.
