The show was Australia’s longest-running one-hour drama series and arguably one of the most popular programs on TV. However, sadly for fans, Foxtel has confirmed to TV Tonight that the ninth season is set to be its be its last.
However, you don’t have to worry about the show coming off air just yet.
Wentworth is about to begin filming its 20 episodes long final season, with Foxtel’s Executive Director of TV Brian Walsh told a local publication that even though season nine will be its last, the final 20 episodes will be spread out over two years so as to satisfy fans.
“Foxtel is proud and delighted to confirm a further 20 episodes of the renewal of this much-loved drama is a testament to Foxtel’s unwavering commitment to Australian story-telling,” Walsh said, before confirming that the final season will be its most action packed yet and some “interesting names” are set to be brought back.
Earlier this year, WHO sat down with Wentworth cast members Leah Purcell, Celia Ireland and Bernard Curry, who give us the inside scoop on what it is like to work on Australia’s most popular TV show.
“It’s got an epic quality to it, if you think about it,” said Ireland.
“It sounds like a bit of a reach, but Game of Thrones has lust, torture, mayhem, sex, murder. We’ve got all that, but it’s in a prison. And it’s really truthful performances but epic huge stories.”
