She had a hit TV show (Seven’s The Secret Daughter) and hit album from that series, but for Jessica Mauboy, one major highlight of 2016 was personal rather than professional: she moved in with longtime boyfriend Themeli Magripilis.
“It’s really great to finally have him living with me,” she tells WHO for its Most Intriguing People issue. “Living in the same space and sharing chores.”
Mauboy, 27, says the couple hasn’t had any teething problems in their new domestic life, and have been busy hitting the hardware store, and planting a herb garden. “We’re making things come to life,” she says, saying Magripilis is “respectful and grown up” as a partner.
“And he’s a good cook,” says the star. “He does a mean roast chicken and a good spaghetti bolognaise—he always reminds me to put basil leaves in the tomato sauce.”
With her busy 2016 and a tour coming up next April, she’s excited about some downtime “heading out bush” with her family in the Northern Territory just before Christmas.
“I’m looking forward to getting out on the dinghy and catching a fish for the family,” says Mauboy, whose dad Ferdy taught her to fish when she was little, baiting her line with an “unpeeled” prawn. “You chuck it out with a hand line and as soon as you feel a vibration, you snap the line up.”
With her ringing success this year, what did she take away from the last 12 months? “Personal growth,” says Mauboy. “I’ve learned so much this year. I’ve taken it with all my heart, and it’s a good thing when you can work your butt off. You come out with such a renewed feeling. I really fell in love with this year.”
Speaking of love, any chance she’ll be hearing wedding bells? “I’ve never really thought about it,” Mauboy tells WHO. “I’m with the love of my life and he’s taught me a lot of things. He’s grounded me and shared many experiences with me in life. If it does happen, it happens. I’m not in a rush.”
