Mel was very open about her health struggles, initially announcing news about her year-long battle with Stage 3 colon cancer in February 2025 after a hopeful update of remission. Mel spoke to WHO at the time, saying that it was “a big year.”

“I was filming MAFS UK throughout that time which was very tough, but I tell you what, I needed to work,” she insists. “It was a very important part of my recovery, actually – having that purpose and feeling like I was still me, which was so important.”

However, since February 17, 2026, Mel’s fight with cancer only worsened. After announcing that filming MAFS Australia was no longer “sustainable” for her in February, 2026, season 13 was revealed to be her final season.

On March 13, 2026, Mel wrote a heartfelt message about the final stage she’s reached in her cancer journey and that her “light is starting to fade.”

Lucinda has responded to these rumours, denying her capability to fulfil Mel Schilling’s TV legacy.

In an Instagram post released in March, 2026, Lucinda wrote that “it’s been a real heart-tug hearing that the radiant Mel Schilling is stepping away from MAFS Australia. What a force. What a woman. She leaves very big shoes to fill.

“Since the news dropped, I’ve had a wave of gorgeous messages asking if I’d consider stepping into her role. I’m deeply touched and truly mean that. The faith people have in me is not lost on me.

“But let’s be honest… I’m very single. And currently in London filming @celebsgodating and very much in student mode. I’m learning, unlearning, stretching, laughing at myself and soaking up wisdom from the agency.”

“Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling passed away peacefully today, surrounded by love,” he wrote.

“In her final moments, when I thought cancer had taken away her ability to speak, she ushered me closer and whispered a message for Maddie and me that will sustain me for the rest of my life. It took all of her remaining strength, and that gesture summed up our wee Melsie perfectly. Even then, her only thought was for Maddie and me.”

Gareth ended the message with a note on how Mel would be remembered outside of her TV career.

“To most of you, she was Mel Schilling — matriarch of MAFS and queen of reality TV,” he wrote. “To Maddie and me, she was our wee Melsie: an incredible mum, role model, and soulmate.”
