Sometimes, karma comes with a side of overcooked pigeon.

After copping criticism from My Kitchen Rules rivals Jane and Shane, best friends Alisha and Deanne watched as the couple’s much-hyped Instant Restaurant went off the rails during the first elimination of the season.

The entrée failed to impress; the pigeon was overcooked, and by the time dessert rolled around, things weren’t looking great. And for the self-described classy bogans, it was starting to look like their rivals might have cooked up their own exit from the competition.

Alisha and Deanne told WHO about the moment they started to suspect Jane and Shane were in serious trouble.

The moment Alisha and Deanne knew they were safe

The besties remember the very moment they realised they were in the clear, after going into Jane and Shane’s Instant Restaurant thinking they were on the chopping block.

“I think as soon as that [pigeon] being overcooked, all the comments around the table, the entrée, there was like an odd person that maybe had the dish that was cooked, but even then I don’t know if it was overly enjoyable,” they said.

“We were like, there’s no way dessert can pretty much bring it back for them.”

And honestly, when your entrée and main course is struggling to win over the table, dessert has a lot of heavy lifting to do. By that point, Alisha and Deanne were feeling pretty good about their chances of staying in the competition. After all, they knew their rivals had a lot of ground to make up, and the final course was looking less like a comeback opportunity and more like one last hurdle.

“I think after we realised we pretty much had it in the bag. Yeah. We were safe,” Alisha and Deanne said.

They had good reason to feel confident, too. Jane and Shane finished with a score of 50, while Alisha and Deanne scored 68, securing their place in the next round.

‘I don’t think you can get that smile off our face’

The result was even sweeter because Jane and Shane had been tipped as potential winners. Alisha and Deanne previously told WHO they couldn’t get the smiles off their faces after their rivals were eliminated. They were especially pleased to come out on top after being underestimated themselves.

“Everyone thought that [Jane and Shane] were going to even possibly win,” they said. “With her work style and all that knowledge of food, for us to be on the bottom and take out the top was absolutely great.”

It’s fair to say the best friends weren’t hiding their excitement. After all, there’s something satisfying about proving people wrong, especially when you’ve been on the receiving end of their criticism.

Now, the classy bogans can put the first elimination behind them and focus on what comes next, with three new gatecrasher teams set to shake things up. Just, please, no more pigeon.
