My Kitchen Rules has served some class warfare this season, with clashes over aesthetics and approach to judging causing debates both at the dinner table and for fans watching at home.
The fourth Instant Restaurant saw couple Tiffany and Giancarlo host the other contestants in Melbourne, where they served a traditional Italian feast. Despite having a slow start to the evening, the night ended in success as the team were scored a total of 86, placing them at the top of the leaderboard.
However, between the eggplant parmigiana entree and rabbit agnolotti, the guest contestants got into yet another fight at the table, after Jane and Shane made an ill-considered comment about money.
Speaking to WHO, Angus and Simon unpacked this moment, revealing their honest thoughts on Jane and Shane’s controversial comment.
What did Jane and Shane say that was so controversial?
While the contestants were waiting for their next meal, they had a discussion about what they would spend the $100,000 prize money on.
After Jane and Shane said it would help them buy a palazzo in Italy, Krysten asked them whether “winning the $100,000 means a lot to [them]”, to which Jane said it would be “lovely”.
Lucy pushed further, asking if it would “change their life”.
To this, Jane said she “feels very strange about money changing your life” and that it’s “not really a focus on [their] existence”.
Krysten and Lucy bit back at this comment, pointing out that $100,000 is “absolutely life-changing” to a lot of people.
In their interview to the camera later, Shane explained that they can understand how $100,000 would be life-changing to people in a “different situation” to them, it just isn’t to them at this stage in their lives.
“If we were at our stage of life and $100,000 was life-changing, I think we’ve done it wrong,” she said.

Angus and Simon believe Jane went too far: ‘There’s a line’
Angus and Simon told WHO that they were completely shocked by Jane and Shane’s comment.
“I’m literally shaking my head still,” Simon said. “That comment is unbelievable.”
“Yeah, come on, Jane,” Angus added. “In what world does $100,000 not change someone’s life?”
For these Adelaide best mates, this was the comment — out of the ‘taste, not eat’ and ‘plategate’ drama — that took the cake as the most controversial.
“I think there’s a line, at least for me anyway, where you can say your thoughts, like Alisha and Deanne style,” Angus said. “And I’ll go, ‘Yeah, cool. Like, that’s just what you think. And that’s okay.’
“That doesn’t necessarily affect what I think. But you’re okay to share that. But [Jane and Shane] are saying stuff like that?”
Angus and Simon added: “When there are people that are currently struggling, just to be like, ‘Whatever, $100 grand’, that’s just really insensitive and completely unnecessary.
“So I think it also sort of just showed what Jane’s sort of inner core was really like.”
