“Hypothermia was brutal. Walking up the hill things went psychedelic. Then absolutely blank. Still no memory now. It’s like watching for the first time,” he captioned the post. “At least we completed the task. Having the Kids in my thoughts got me through. 👶💪🏼🥊👍having low body fat worked against me. Time to fatten up!! 🤙 Body core temp 34.0 degrees.”

For the task, the recruits were forced to jump from a helicopter into freezing cold waters then hike 3km in their wet uniforms. While others powered through, Shannan was visibly overcome by the cold and lost all coordination.

When he eventually made it to the top of the hill, Ant Middleton, the chief instructor, helped him change into warm clothes, while his fellow co-star, Firass Dirani, fetched him a hot drink. When his body temperature eventually returned to normal, he admitted he had no recollection of the last part of the challenge.

“Did I pass out?” he asked the DS (directing staff.)

“No, did you lose a bit of memory?” they prompted, to which Shannan replied, “yep.”

“Just short term?” the DS continued. “Yep,” Shannan responded.

Later in the show, Shannan told Ant that he couldn’t recall the extent of his discomfort.

”I was okay, I just blacked out. I can’t remember,” he said. “It didn’t hurt me, it didn’t scare me. I didn’t anything. I just lost time.”

In an appearance on The Morning Show this week, Shannan explained that weight had dropped to 74kg by the end of production – a whopping 5kg from where he started.

“I was 74 when I came back. You could see the veins in my stomach and everything,” he said.

“I was 78 or 79 when I went in but it’s hard to keep the weight on when you are doing the training.”
