Those who love a good horror have been waiting with bated breath for the release of The Nun.
However, despite the hype and the no doubt horrifying trailer, unfortunately, the film doesn’t deliver what it promises– a good old fashion scare.
Sure, throughout the 95-minute movie there are a few tense moments where you are holding your breath waiting for a freaky looking demonic figure to jump out unexpectedly, but the plot in and of itself isn’t worth a second glace.
Set in the 1950s, the film follows Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga – the young sibling of Conjuring star Vera Farmiga) and experienced priest, Father Burke (Damián Birchir) as they embark on a journey to an Abbey in Romania after the Vatican insist they visit. Here, they meet up with local peasant Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet) who discovered a dead nun while he was delivering food to the convent. As the trio investigate her death, they uncover an unholy secret and the same demonic nun that terrorized viewers in The Conjuring 2. Risking their lives, and their faith, they confront the malevolent force.
Despite the creepy mood that is established in the early scenes of the film—which ultimately make you think you are in for one hell of a ride—once the three main characters enter the abbey, the film copies every overused horror trick in the book, making it not only unoriginal but also boring.
Overall, the malevolent force seemed to prompt giggles not shrieks as we are inundated with creepy reflections, magically moving crosses, and sighs instead of screams.
Quite frankly, it was of an unholy mess.
