Gogglebox is back with a bang, with the show’s return last night drawing in an impressive 1.119 million viewers nationally. But it seems the show, which has now become an Aussie TV sensation, isn’t yet sharing the riches it earns with its stars – many of whom we can reveal were discovered in bizarre and hilarious circumstances.
Speaking exclusively to WHO’s TV podcast, Binge List, popular channel surfers Angie and Yvie insist that they are definitely not stars yet – as they’ve yet to see any lifestyle benefits, despite the big ratings.
‘We haven’t been to the Logies,’ complains Yvie, good naturedly. ‘So, until we’ve been to the Logies, we’re not real TV stars.
‘Apparently, we can win Logies, we can win three times, but apparently we cannot go!’
Angie says she is so desperate to attend, she’s even considering sneaking in as a plus one.
‘I wonder what would happen if we went as plus ones? They can’t stop us then!’
She points out she’s definitely not rolling in cash from her part in the hit show, telling Binge List that like all the stars of the show she still has a day job, by necessity. On the matter of what they get paid, it’s apparently not enough to live on without a normal job as well. ‘Everyone has to work still,’ she says. ‘Oh god, otherwise we’d be on the streets!’
It’s been a rapid rise to fame from the very ordinary Aussie households featured on the show, with Yvie revealing to podcast listeners the bizarre way that some of the families ended up being cast.
‘Leigh and Keith were arguing in a food court at a shopping centre,’ she confides. ‘Anastacia was selling her nuts in the market.’
Angie and Yvie ended up being submitted for consideration without their knowledge, after being sneakily filmed in their living room by a friend.
‘Our story is a little boring,’ she tells. ‘My friend was a post producer on The Bachelor and he got an internal email that went around saying, we’re about to start casting, if you know anyone who talks a lot and isn’t afraid to air their opinions, let us know.
‘He sent in a video of Angie and me, and our other flatmate who didn’t get on, without my knowledge, and he said, “I’ve done something and if you get a call from a woman, it’s for a show and I think you would be great at it.”
‘And we were like, no it’s never going to take off, it sounded so stupid, so we just went, yeah, we’ll do it.’
