Known for their exacting nature, attention to detail and super-high standards, Victoria’s Leigh and Kristie had prepared the other House Rules teams to expect a tough critique when it came to the renovation of their huge property on the Mornington Peninsula. As David said, “Leigh is a perfectionist and Kristie can be … tough.”
But the cast seemed unprepared for the couple’s generous scores—and the value of their “California cool” zones, which included Mel and Dave’s “luxe-surfy crash pad” bonus room, Josh and Brandon’s sharp yacht-style entry and Toad and Mandy’s “next-level” (and that, from Leigh!) den. All together, a Purplebricks local property expert estimated the renovated house at $925,000, more than $385,000 more than the expert’s original assessment and $30,000 more than the prize money for this year’s House Rules winners.
As Kristie often said while walking through their reno, “Holy Moly,” and her first tearful reaction came with Josh and Brandon’s entry, complete with nautical features and a white leather banquette she called “breathtaking,” telling the Queensland mates, “You nailed it.”
Leigh and Kristie’s kids fared well, too, with son Kobe, 6, enthralled with his skate-themed bedroom (although Jess and Jared’s quarterpipe was deemed unsafe) and Billie, 3, eager to play in her new space, courtesy of Mel and Dave. “It’s a dream bedroom,” Kristie said. “I couldn’t fault it. The colour pallette was stunning.”
And, to Mel and Dave’s surprise after a fractious build with Chiara and David landed them the burden of the bonus room, Leigh and Kristie gave them a pass. The five extra points landed the WA married couple on top of the leaderboard with 38 points, surpassing Josh and Brandon by three points.
Now it’s on to Chiara and David’s Perth home for the next big project on ‘House Rules’ (Tues., June 12 at 7.30 PM on Seven).
