OPINION: These MAFS couples just got sabotaged by their parents

Hey, mum doesn't always know best.

One of the beauties of Homestays Week is the merging of the real world with the fantasy of the MAFS experiment. As the week is now in full swing, I’ve been on the edge of my seat waiting for the couples’ loved ones to do us all a favour and knock some sense into them.

Instead, on tonight’s episode on March 24, I watched along in confusion, and felt pretty conflicted.

Whether it was the delivery or the advice itself, the two cents these parents were dishing out felt all wrong… and it wasn’t what I think the couples needed to hear.

Now, obviously, I don’t really think that the parents were intending to make things worse for their children and their partners.

At the end of the day, they’re just giving advice that they think is best.

However, sometimes mothers may not always know best… or at least the best way to deliver their opinion to their daughters.

After tonight’s episode, I found two parents’ advice in particular quite misguided, and I need to talk about it.

Alissa’s mum’s advice sent her spiralling

After Alissa floated the idea of moving to Sydney to be with David after the experiment, her mum hit her with an immediate roadblock, referencing her “biological clock.”

“I worry about the fact that, you know, you want to have a family and you don’t want to keep putting it off,” her mum said to Alissa after meeting up with her and David. “The goal is to find a forever partner and to have a family.”

“Unfortunately, the biological clock is ticking and we can’t wait forever.”

Now, I acknowledge that Alissa’s mum would be concerned that her daughter is veering away from what she truly wants.

I have no doubt Alissa could have confided in her mum and told her she was set on finding a life partner to settle down and start a family with.

Now, Alissa’s sudden change of heart has probably raised alarm bells for her.

However, to me, people can change their mind.

On the one hand, maybe Alissa needed this wake-up call to see if she was really serious about her relationship with David.

On the other hand, what is the alternative in Alissa’s mum’s eyes? Break up with David and settle down with someone in Adelaide because it’s more convenient? Someone she doesn’t even know?

Surely the person is more important that the location.

While her friends offered some measured advice and praised David for his openness, this comment from Alissa’s mum surprised me… and it’s no wonder Alissa is spiralling.

In my eyes, Alissa could’ve done without the mother-daughter pep talk.

Bec’s dad gives Danny the green light

Bec and Danny’s week kicked off on a good note, with Bec’s beloved dog immediately giving Danny her tick of approval (IYKYK).

After a successful lunch with Bec’s parents and cousin, phrases like “I can’t imagine life without him” and “long distance isn’t an option” were thrown around a lot, giving the impression that Bec and Danny were finally, truly on the up.

Even Bec’s dad Lee took Danny aside to give his honest opinion.

“Honestly, I’ll be honest with you,” he said to Danny, man-to-man as they say. “I hope it works.”

While that’s a lovely sentiment in theory, particularly because he can see how much Danny means to Bec, just telling him to go for it is perhaps giving Bec a false sense of hope.

Fans have speculated online that Danny is purely in the show for his “image” rather than Bec herself — particularly after all the fights they’ve had (aka the honeymoon, *that* Gia comment, Bec’s horrific “receipts“… yeah, the list goes on).

Danny’s concern for his image was apparent in this episode as he asked Bec not to challenge him about a joke he made while the cameras were around.

I mean, the cameras are basically always around… what did he expect?

Also, if this was the moment that made him reassess moving in with Bec, then perhaps that was never truly his plan?

After so many ups and downs, I reckon it would have just been better if Lee told the couple to cut their losses and go their separate ways.
