Chris Egan started his acting career in local Sydney musicals and now he’s a fully fledged Hollywood legend.
Here’s everything you need to know about the 32-year-old honey including his stint as Nick Smith on Channel 7’s Home and Away.
When did he first appear on Home and Away and how long was he part of the show?
Chris Egan was sweet sixteen when he first appeared on Home and Away as Nick Smith in April 2000. Since then he’s gotten all grown up on us. And looks like this…
Nick Smith from Home and Away
Egan’s character Nick Smith was the younger brother of Will (Zac Drayson) and Hayley Smith (Bec Cartwright), three children who got fostered out but then returned to their dad Ken (Anthony Phelan) and his then-fiancee Irene (Lynn Granger).
In real life, Egan has three brothers, Joel, Tim and Ben.
And a pet poodle-x called Barnaby.
Nick Smith arrives in Summer Bay
Nick’s first scene sets him up as a lost teenager and in subsequent episodes he’s never quite free of those troubles.
In the very first episode he gets chased and beaten up by a thug called Johnno. Nick owed the bikie drug dealer money and tried to get away with it, but ended up paying for it in another way instead. With his face (ouch).
How did his character leave the show?
In the three years he was on the show, Nick’s character led a troubled life, and no more so than just before his exit from Summer Bay.
Wrongly accused of sexual assault, Nick got expelled from Summer Bay High and was forced to do community service. But once Angie, the perpetrator and principal of Summer Bay High, was exposed as having set him up, Nick was reinstated at his original school.
After a short stint on a reality TV show, Nick got into more hot water before being approached by a Hollywood agent which is how Nick Smith left Home and Away.
Kind of like real life…
Is there any chance that he would ever return to the show?
Well, he did win a Logie for Best New Talent in 2001, but since then Egan has gone on to do wild and wonderful things in the US. So it’s unlikely he’ll be back. But with Home and Away you can never say never.
What was Nick’s most memorable moment on Home and Away?
There are so many! In one episode, Nick saves Seb from drowning, then there’s an episode where Summer Bay High principal Angie tore off her clothes and started screaming and accusing Nick of assaulting her.
In real life, Egan said that filming overseas in London and shooting scenes for Home and Away spinoff Home and Away: Secrets and the City were among his favourite experiences.
