When Australia last saw Seal, he was trying his best to win a third Voice title with artist Lucy Sugerman. Though the campaign came up short, the singer eased the blow by turning to his own favourite music — songs from the Rat Pack generation — to produce his 10th studio album, Standards (out Nov. 10).
“The process was the thing I enjoyed most,” says Seal, 54, of recording classics such as “Luck Be A Lady” and “The Nearness of You” with musicians such as Randy Waldman, who played piano on tour with Frank Sinatra. “Having an arranger to arrange the orchestrations according to my voice, and then listening to the orchestra play the middle of “Smile,” the emotion coming from that was inspiring.
Although his interpretations sound effortless, the English singer concedes he was “exposed” vocally. “These songs were more difficult than singing my own stuff,” he tells WHO. “It required a discipline. It required your voice to be in shape and it required me to prepare and to be a good storyteller.”
Seal concedes, however, that he’d rather let his children take control of the stereo when he’s around them. The father of four with his ex-wife, Heidi Klum, says, “I’m curious in my kids’ musical choices. Like Henry, my eldest son, he’s developed very interesting musical tastes. So I spend months of my time listening to the music they’re listening to whenever they are in the car, and I try to understand them more through their music.”
Outside of the kids, is Seal seeking the company of others? “Living in the moment is another one of my daily mantras,” he says, “and I’m enjoying that. Am I looking at a relationship? Hashtag real talk for a second? No, not really.”
