The new season of ‘Secret City’ is even better than the first

Anna Torv is back in Foxtel's homegrown political thriller

When Secret City: Under the Eagle begins, Harriet Dunkley (Anna Torv) is out of prison and coming to the end of her parole period. She has no interest in anything to do with the world of politics. Or so she tells herself.

When her former cell mate asks for help in getting an appointment with Minister for Home Affairs Catriona Bailey (Jacki Weaver), it sets the former investigative reporter on a collision course with another major cover-up – one she can’t resist trying to get to the bottom of.

It’s linked to a massive explosion in the suburbs of Adelaide that wiped out an entire family – all except one teenage boy, who is arrested under suspicion of having terrorist links.

But Harry knows things are never quite what they seem, and she teams up with a maverick independent MP (Danielle Cormack), agreeing to be her media adviser in order to regain access to the corridors of power and get to the truth.

With key characters and dynamics established, the political thriller’s second season can dispense with the exposition and charge straight into its intricately woven tale – a taut conspiracy that’s better executed than the show’s initial run of episodes.

As we’re thrust back into the dark underbelly of Australian politics, the show doesn’t pause to spell things out for viewers, with the intrigue set to high and pieces slowly falling into place as the story unfolds. (Starts Mon., Mar. 4 at 8.30pm; Fox Showcase) 4.5 stars
