If you’ve listened to WHO magazine’s new TV podcast, Binge List (available on iTunes and OMNY), you’ll know we have questions about the first episode of Westworld‘s second season. Was anyone really expecting the long-awaited series return to be anything but a flood of head-scratching twists and WTF moments? Here are the questions we most want answered:
1. Who put the sea there? And why was it filled with bodies?
It’s kind of a large topographical feature to have just come from nowhere, but who was behind the major reshaping of the park’s landscape? And why? As for all those floating Hosts in the water, including one we saw in close-up that seems to have been Teddy (James Marsden)—his surname is Flood, after all—what brought about their demise? Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) claims to have killed them, but how and why? (Did we mention we have a lot of questions?)
2. What’s up with Bernard?
Besides confessing to a murderous spree, Bernard was displaying some odd behaviour in the first episode, no doubt on account of his system experiencing a “critical corruption”. Injecting himself with some goop stolen from another Host seemed to settle his tremors, but all is clearly not right with the former head of programming.
There is one fan theory that has a convincing answer to this question, so skip ahead to the next item on this list if you don’t want to read it, since some fans did work out the big twist from season one. OK, here’s the theory: when he wakes up on the beach in the present, Bernard is actually—spoiler alert—Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood), who has inserted her consciousness into his body.
3. Where did the tiger come from?
Like Lost‘s polar bear, the Bengal tiger seen on the beach in episode one is in completely the wrong place. Apparently, it comes from Park 6, whatever that is. One thing is likely: it didn’t come from Shogun World (another of the parks we’re yet to see), since Bengal tigers aren’t found in Japan.
4. What’s the story with the Drone Hosts?
Besides being pretty creepy, the white robots (that actually look like robots) seem pretty intent on their methodical work. What is its purpose?
5. Is Robert Ford really dead?
His maggot-infested body would seem to suggest that we’ve seen the last of Ford (Anthony Hopkins), but we wouldn’t put it past Westworld to pull a swift one on us and have Ford return later in the season.
6. Will Maeve find her daughter?
Perhaps the more important question is what Maeve (Thandie Newton) will find if she tracks down the Host who played her daughter in her pre-brothel storyline. Will Maeve’s daughter be able to access her memories in the same way her one-time mother can?
