Just two weeks into MAFS 2026 and the experiment is already fuelling debate – not only over explosive couple dynamics, but over what fans say is a clear double standard between brides and grooms when it comes to physical preferences.
While groom Chris has come under fire for comments about not liking people who are “clingy” or “fat”, viewers have also revisited earlier remarks from bride Mel, who openly said she wanted a man resembling Bradley Cooper, sparking questions about why some preferences are condemned while others pass with little scrutiny.
The conversation reignited during Tuesday night’s episode when all of the couples watched each other’s casting application videos, with Chris’ video upsetting wife Brook.
Brook was horrified at Chris’ comments about women
The comments Chris made immediately unsettled Brook, who later questioned what they revealed about his attitude toward women.
“I’m f–king appalled,” she said during the episode.
She later confronted him directly: “Your comments about fake tan, clingy people and fat people… it was f–ked. You’re sitting there and you’re talking to women about women’s bodies, it’s not a comment for you.”

Chris attempted to excuse the remarks as “boy behaviour”, saying they were made while trying to impress his friends. “That’s not an excuse,” Brook replied. “You’re 31 and you shouldn’t be speaking like that.”
Different reaction to Mel’s comments on her groom
While backlash to Chris’ comments was immediate, particularly his reference to not liking “fat” people, fans were quick to draw comparisons to Mel’s stated desire for a Bradley Cooper–type partner, which did not receive the same on-screen condemnation from her husband Luke.
Instead, it was online users who reacted strongly to Mel’s comments.
One viewer wrote: “What makes Mel think that a guy who looks like Bradley Cooper would be into her? She can’t treat someone she isn’t attracted to with dignity and respect. She believes she is entitled to be treated like a pink princess. Seriously WTF?”

Another added: “I feel like she’s delusional. Lives in some fairy land and refuses to get back to reality. It’s perfectly clear why she is single. Bradley Cooper would not put up with that!”
Double standards
The contrasting reactions have left MAFS viewers divided, with many arguing that while body-based comments like Chris’ deserved criticism, the broader conversation has exposed inconsistency in how physical ideals are treated depending on whether they’re voiced by a groom or a bride.
One social media user wrote: “Oooh so she can have a desire to have Bradley Cooper or someone with his features but Chris can’t say no fat chicks. Gotcha, good stuff, equality and all that.”
Chris’ promise after his casting video was revealed
Back with Chris and Brook, the groom insisted he wants to change, acknowledging the culture he’s been immersed in.

“I’m the happiest I’ve been in a long time, and I’ve been living in the footie lifestyle which is pretty toxic and unproductive, but I’ve got no one else to blame. It’s about time I changed,” Chris said.
But the damage may already be done. After discussing the revelations with a friend, Brook was advised to walk away if Chris doesn’t genuinely respect women – raising serious questions about the future of their relationship.
