After one of the most talked-about finales of the year, fans are already obsessing over the return of Heated Rivalry.
The breakout queer sports drama has quickly become a streaming obsession, and while Season 2 is confirmed, patience will be required.
So what’s next for Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov? Here’s everything we know so far:
Why did Heated Rivalry become such a phenomenon?

When Heated Rivalry debuted on November 28, it exceeded all expectations, rapidly gaining buzz across social media and streaming charts. Created by Jacob Tierney, the series adapts Rachel Reid’s beloved Game Changers novel into a slow-burn, emotionally charged hockey romance.
The story follows rival NHL superstars Shane Hollander of Canada and Ilya Rozanov of Russia, whose secret relationship unfolds over a decade. Their deeply human dynamic struck a chord well beyond traditional romance audiences.
The creator credits the source material for the show’s broad appeal. “If you’ve read a lot of romance novels, what stands out about Shane and Ilya is that their story is not the norm,” he told Evan Ross Katz. “One of the things that [the romance] genre doesn’t get is taken seriously… it’s asking for it.”
Will there be a Season 2 of Heated Rivalry?

Yes. Crave officially renewed Heated Rivalry for a second season on December 12, 2025, with HBO Max confirming its global return.
There’s even potential for more beyond that. According to GQ Hype, stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie are signed on for three seasons, while Tierney hinted to Collider that he already has a long-term plan… though he’s keeping details under wraps.
When will Season 2 of Heated Rivalry premiere?

While there’s no release date yet, a return won’t be immediate. Season 1 wrapped on December 26, 2025, with the holiday finale affectionately dubbed “Cottagemas” by fans.
Williams suggested to Variety that filming may begin in “July or August,” which likely places the premiere sometime in late 2026 or early 2027. Tierney echoed that expectation, explaining, “It can’t be same time next year… So it’s going to be a little bit later, but it’s still going to be soon.”
What happened at the end of Heated Rivalry Season 1?

The final episodes saw major emotional breakthroughs for Shane and Ilya. Inspired by teammate Scott Hunter’s public coming-out moment, Ilya chooses to stay in Canada, leading to the pair’s long-awaited summer together at the cottage- a symbol of both secrecy and safety.
Their time away allows them to imagine a future that includes honesty, commitment, and shared goals. The season ends on a hopeful note as Shane comes out to his parents, receives their support, and drives off with Ilya.
Tierney later explained why the show diverged slightly from the book’s ending. “Just letting them drive together… and just being sweet. That’s enough for me,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
What will happen in Heated Rivalry Season 2?

Season 2 will draw from The Long Game, the sixth Game Changers novel. Tierney confirmed it will serve as the “foundational document,” noting the story becomes more focused and emotionally complex.
“It’s a real relationship and real relationships come with struggle,” he said. Themes of identity, distance, and growth will take center stage, including Ilya exploring therapy, while the romance continues to evolve.
As Tierney told Variety, intimacy remains important but changes meaningfully: “It’s really about continuing that progress… how do you sustain it?”
Who will return for Heated Rivalry Season 2?

Shane and Ilya remain the heart of the show. Supporting characters like Scott Hunter and Kip Grady will continue to appear, and additional figures from the Game Changers universe may be introduced, including Ryan Price and Kyle Swift.
“Heated Rivalry, as a show, will always be focused around Shane and Ilya,” Tierney said.
