I thought I was above TV plot twists until I started watching Tell Me Lies

As a bona fide streaming expert, I’m usually well-versed when it comes to new TV shows and series popping up on streaming.

One that slipped my radar, however, was a little series called Tell Me Lies – currently in its second season after premiering in 2022 – which I first came across after seeing several edits on, you guessed it, TikTok.

It wasn’t a particular edit or scene that did it for me either, rather, it was the multiple comments of fans comparing the show to the likes of Euphoria and Pretty Little Liars that piqued my interest.

I’ll be the first to admit, I had low expectations. I figured it would be another angsty teen drama that would be slightly cringe and unrelatable – but boy was I proven wrong.

What is the plot of Tell Me Lies?

With it right there in the title, Tell Me Lies is full of, well, lies.

And while you might think being aware of the deception will prepare you for what these characters get up to, the show still manages to expertly execute some of the best plot twists I’ve ever seen.

We start by meeting several college students: Lucy and her two besties, Pippa and Bree, then Stephen and his two pals, Wrigley and Evan. As you can imagine, there is all sorts of drama to be had with a group this big.

To keep things interesting, the show unfolds in a non-linear fashion, weaving together multiple timelines to take the group from their late teens to mid-twenties.

From their first day as freshmen at Baird College in 2007 to Bree and Evan’s nuptials in 2015, the timeline spans eight years as we slowly start to piece together their shared history.

And while we’ll avoid any spoilers (for now), the main plot point is the relationship between Lucy and Stephen as they enter one of the most toxic, on-again, off-again romances that will have you gasping at the audacity. And trust me, there’s a lot.

We also get to see the various storylines of their friends play out, including the beginning of Bree and Evan, since we know they eventually end up married (that’s not a spoiler, we promise).

Who is cast in Tell Me Lies?

Grace Van Patten and Jackson White star as Lucy and Stephen, respectively. Despite the drama between their characters, the two co-stars are actually dating in real life, and successfully at that.

Joining them are Sonia Mena as Pippa, Catherine Missal as Bree, Spencer House as Wrigley and Branden Cook as Evan to round out the main act.

Although it’s the new faces in season two that had me most excited, with Thomas Doherty and Tom Ellis joining the cast.

Oh, and did I mention the series is produced by Emma Roberts? Yes, the scream queen herself has her hands all over this – if that alone isn’t enough to convince you to tune in.

Where to watch Tell Me Lies in Australia

If you’re like me and can’t wait to binge the entire first and second season, then you’ll want to make sure you’re subscribed to Disney+ to stream it.

And trust me when I say this, you’ll be begging for more episodes before you can even hit ‘next episode’.

Will there be a third season of Tell Me Lies?

Good news! Season three has been confirmed, and even better news is that Tom Ellis, who starred as Oliver (the professor), has shared that filming is underway.

A release date is yet to be pencilled in our calendars, but Tom has shared that we “will not be disappointed,” and with the end of season two still playing on our minds, we are in for a juicy ride.

“It is a dark, toxic and funny as ever,” he shared with People, “And just when you thought our characters couldn’t do anything more ridiculous to themselves, they ended up doing it.”

Meaghan Oppenheimer, the show’s creator and Tom’s wife, also revealed to Variety that there “will probably be a time jump” as the cast transitions out of University.

“We’ll get more and more of the future as time goes on. I think by the third season, we will still have some 2008 because there’s stuff that we have to wrap up there,

“But I think it would be a little bit shifted in the sense that there will probably be more 2015 than 2008.”

So get watching if you haven’t already, because we are in for a wild one.
