Farmer Dylan and Jarrad made their final decisions during this season’s finale of Farmer Wants A Wife. While fans mostly predicted the farmers’ choices (with Dylan choosing Ally and Jarrad choosing Brodie), they didn’t predict that one of the men would be rejected first.
As Jarrad and Yvonne held hands while the farmer began (what was going to be) his rejection speech, the contestant stopped him in his tracks, telling him that he’s “not her farmer”.
She walked away and left the almond farmer standing alone and somewhat dazed.
The rejection sparked mixed reactions from fans, with many applauding Yvonne’s bravery while others called it “nasty and cowardly”.
Yvonne revealed to WHO what was really going through her head in that moment, and why – while it might not have seemed like it – she was “terrified”.
Fans undecided over Yvonne’s bold rejection of the farmer
Yvonne’s decision to reject Jarrad definitely made for dramatic reality TV and the divided response from fans is evidence of this.
Many viewers believed her decision “took away Brodie ever being able to say ‘he chose me'”.
“She wanted to get in first,” one fan commented on social media. “Cowardly act really.”
“Would have been better if she had just wished them both well. She didn’t want to be dumped so she did that,” another said.
However, other viewers were more forgiving, labelling what Yvonne did as “ballsy” and “being true to herself”.
“It’s not easy going on a show like that and being let down,” a viewer wrote. “She just beat him to it, so he didn’t have to go through the whole rigmarole of saying you’re not the one for me.”
“Well done Yvonne!! Much respect to the way you handled it,” another fan agreed.
Whether viewers agreed with her decision or not, some pointed out that the way it played out could have simply been pushed by producers trying to “push more drama forward” and that she actually “should have left earlier”.
“It made for good drama when she said what she came to say, then turned her back and walked away,” a fan observed. “No hugs, kisses, good luck for the future. It would have hurt, though.”
Yvonne defends her decision to walk away
Yvonne admitted that her decision to reject Jarrad in this way was “terrifying” because of all she’d invested in him.
“I have genuinely invested not only my time, but my emotions and an opportunity to find my forever person,” she said.
“But as I walked away, I was almost immediately proud. I think it was the first time in a very long time that I put myself first, because it’s something I struggled doing in the past.
“At the end of the day, you’ve got to decide whether they’re your person or not,” she said.
Yvonne admits she was falling in love with Jarrad’s ‘potential’
Yvonne revealed that there was just under a week between her final date with Jarrad and the finale, and it was during this time that she was able to do some serious reflecting.
She admitted that “it was hard”, but when she did “take off those rose-coloured glasses” and “popped out of the reality TV bubble”, she had a “gut feeling” about Jarrad that was telling her that he wasn’t for her.
“I definitely had some time to reflect on everything and start deciding whether I was falling in love with the reality in front of me or if I was falling in love with the potential,” she said.
Ally’s decision to walk off Dylan’s farm inspired Yvonne
When walking up to Jarrad at the finale, Yvonne said she asked herself whether she was “going to go with [her] brain or [her] heart.”
“And then as he started talking, I was like, ‘No, I just got to say it,'” she explained. “And I feel like it’s almost an Ally moment – if you want to stop me at any time and say what you want to say [you can].”
She was referring to when Ally decided to leave Dylan’s farm halfway through the season, taking the approach that if the farmer wanted her, he would chase after her.
Despite ultimately choosing to come back (and ending up with Dylan), this approach of Ally’s inspired Yvonne, and the fact that Jarrad didn’t fight for her was proof in her mind that she’d made the right decision.
“I think, realistically, looking back at what his [Jarrad’s] decision was, I think he was like, ‘It is what it is’,” Yvonne said about Jarrad,
While a part of Yvonne may have been waiting for Jarrad to stop her and convince her that he’s the one for her, his silence did all the talking.
So while fans may have mixed reactions about how the rejection went down, Yvonne stands by it.
